Just had a couple of webbinars dedicated to simulation in CAD. It allows to "look into" working machinery without building mock-ups and prototypes "in flesh", yet it isn't cheap and one got to be a pro to be able to model it. On the bright side, there are more and more cloud services for that, so you don't need a super-powerful desktop (which then also needs upgrades) of your own and expensive software, you can now rent time and power of cloud service for simulations, which still isn't cheap, but got to be cheaper.

I wonder how did they compensate for wear of tools in the old days? As far as I know, modern so called 4D CNC machines control cutting surfaces themselves by lasers and are able to compensate for wear automatically or signal when it's time to change or sharpen a tool. I get that the should have been control guys, who would measure either every detail or one out of a bunch to save time, but then what?
