(slow clap) And do not underestimate steel weapons, Spaniards would smash any resistance even without firearms and cavalry. Obsidian shards may be insanely sharp and never get dull, but steel bends without breaking, and steel blades can both slice and pierce, thus it is also a story about technological superiority.

  5. Isn't the fact, that Tolkien cared to put a lot of exceptions to his conlings an indication that he was somewhat biased by his native English? Not all languages have many exceptions, I believe (I'm not a linguist, though) my native Latvian has very, very few exceptions besides modal verb "to be"/"to have" and the verb "to go".

  9. I'm centrist. Maybe left leaning, sure, but still centrist. And as a whole, there are no such insane liberals vs conservatives hostilities in Europe. On the other hand, I'm might be an extremist at the same time, because I hate to be annoyed by the loudmouth assholes. Thus my fantasies may also include provoking a fight between far right and far left, with killing off survivors afterwards.

  10. Several years ago, on some history podcast an archaeologist (British, I guess) also told a story, how she was fascinated for years by Amazons. One of the things, that wasn't really clear about them, was their Greek depictions with Greek letters above, but those were not Greek words, seemed like a gibberish. But what if that was how Greeks phonetically transcribed words of "Amazon language" how they sounded? So she shoved this to linguists specialized in languages of Northern Caucasus (Alanian, for example), and yes, to their own surprise linguists recognized familiar words, like "princess", "dagger" etc.
