Several years ago, on some history podcast an archaeologist (British, I guess) also told a story, how she was fascinated for years by Amazons. One of the things, that wasn't really clear about them, was their Greek depictions with Greek letters above, but those were not Greek words, seemed like a gibberish. But what if that was how Greeks phonetically transcribed words of "Amazon language" how they sounded? So she shoved this to linguists specialized in languages of Northern Caucasus (Alanian, for example), and yes, to their own surprise linguists recognized familiar words, like "princess", "dagger" etc.
