Electric cars do a lot for sustainability, only battery is an issue, other than that, they have very, very few moving parts, thus less wear and tear outside suspension and electric motors. Emissions wise, electric cars win over internal combustion engines even in the worst scenario - if ALL electricity is produced by coal plants, and that includes power needed to produce an electric car compared to a fuel powered one, not from the go, but during it's lifecycle it does win. If, however, electric power is produced by more environmentally friendly means, it takes much less time to become emissions neutral.

P.S. I know, I'm not a good example of an average consumer, but I do have:
- a 11 year old phone (not a smartphone, and I don't use it currently), and I'm not swapping my smartphone unless it pisses me off or breaks (threw the previous one out, as enough is enough!),
- my previous PC was used for 12 years, and only got swapped, because it no longer was up to the spec,
- my bicycle was 16 years old, and I got a new one only because it got stolen,
- my car is slightly over 25 years old, rusty, simple, small people's car, a station wagon, although, I must admit it still is there partly because it has so called GTI engine, so the old fart is in no way slow.
