Hmm, I thought viruses were "a run-away genetic code", but yes, being leftovers from times of replicators before life also make sense, except... Wouldn't that mean, there are two, interacting, yet different, parallel brunches of evolution on this planet - viruses and living cells? In that case, why wouldn't there be third (fourth, fifth etc) parallel lines of replicators too, some of them using means other than RNA/DNA for passing information? This doesn't sound very plausible, so I'm sticking to idea of viruses being just rogue code, a glitch. Especially because there is another example of non-living replicants (sort of) that came from life - prions.
