I just say one thing. There is a reason why Winged Hussars look like they do.

My theory is that Gaul Anonymous at least himself believed that Otton III promised Bolesław the crown of the King. Though formalization did take some time. But I seriously doubt this event happen the way as described. But may be exaggerated description as old chroniclers tend to do. My guess the intention was to show friendship between two rulers. What definitely was a thing.

I think it is also worth to remind the context. Poland at the time controlled Silesia and Pomeriania (including famous Jomsborg). Bolesław the Brave was also uncle of Cnut the Great (King of Englan, Denmark and Norway). Though it technically was two decades after the event. Anyway, point is that at the time Germans did have serious tensions with the Wends. Who were West Slavs (Veleti and Lusatian Serbs) inhabiting East Germany (modern). Fact that Polans turned Christian and were willing to cooperate with Empire, was huge! Especially as Wends (commonly confused with Vikings) were absolute pain to deal. And just say that Poland was several times stronger. So Otton really hoped to ally with them and he did.

And I'm on the Otton side here! (though could be biased) Thing is that Poland was not a German tributary! It was a major regional power, who voluntary turn Christian. It would be worst thing imaginable if Poles would ally with Veleti! History of Rome could potentially repeat itself. Brilliant move of Otton, vastly help stabilize situation in the entire region. And to be clear many German Crusaders did hate it. As it deprived them right of the conquest and disrespect Poles because of that. Poles did brilliant job in convincing Europe to turn against Teutonic Order.
