It is not a secret that old long range radars can detect aircraft's. But that say only that "somewhere in the country there is something here". To actually track stealth plane you need short wave radars, what can't detect anything. For example in famous Nighthawk shooting incident. This kind of radar help Serbs to take stealth plane, but they already know where it would be due to planing mistake of NATO. It was still pure luck that missile catch moment when bomb bay was open.

@hanskrieger4299 It was combination of elements: 1) NATO pilots were flying on the same route. So SAM did know where they would be. 2) SAM have old long radar what could detect stealth planes, but not target it. 3) Knowing where and when they would be they fish for lock. With short range targeting radar. 4) Pilot opened bomb bay exactly when missile was inbound. What was pure luck. Anyway. Those are circumstances basically impossible to repeat. Combination of high skill, risk and pure luck. Especially as window was extremely small.

Yes. NATO use several special radars to track stealth planes. But only they have this tech.
31
@Wannes_ You play too many video games.
17
@jameskelly7412 Yes. F-35 is actually better.
14
@AcidBombYT According to who? Russia Today?
7
@jameskelly7412 Lol, it is. It has way more modern coating and EW systems. The difference is that it was not designed as competition. It just happen to end as good. But lot of tankies missing the point.
6
@olderchin1558 Shocking revelation. Modern systems know where they planes are.
5
@syncopatedfeb4770 You mean those what in over 80% are destroyed (and rest hit civilian targets)? NATO and Ukraine has a lot of old MANPAD's and SPAAGS, from time when close support was still a thing. Someone need take nice cuts in cash, to promote such ineffective weapons.

@hughjackman1065 Stealth aircraft's could be detected in the 60's. What is not the same as ability to actually target them in the combat environment. What is something Russia straight can't do. But they love pretend otherwise, with highly specific exceptions. I don't see point in arguing over something you do not understand.
1
@petersinclair3997 We not talking about Western radars. West know that they can detect that stuff. But F-35 already shadowed j20.
1
@Lucifer-qt9gh That also. Yes.
1
@JohnJones-k9d Yes. Old. Doesn't mean useless. But tankies regularly ignore what it actually did, because it is convenient to they delusional world. And no. It did not allow target Nighthawk. That is pure BS, debunked by the SAM operator himself. It only provided them with specific data, what with other specific data, give them window of opportunity. Anyone who claim that Russia or Iran actually can target those aircraft's, simply lie. US never denied that this form of limited detection is still possible. It always was.
1
@TrueIN-m3e He died in 90's
1
@guerrillazack1977 In case of A-10 it is propaganda. F-35 is not venerable.
1
@chitaegandalalake263 S-400 is only marginally improved S-300. It can't detect F-35! Whole detection drama is that ancient long wave radars, used in the past for early warning. In fact always could detect stealth planes. That they are somewhere in the country. But all claims that they actually can target anything are a lie. In fact you would know about that anyway, as US would jam whole system with ECM.
1
@jsbfe9395 Storm Shadow isn't stealth. It is low attitude cruise missile. What yes. Absolutely can be taken out with SHORAD, like Pantsir. Though in many cases those are MALDS, so decoys. And no. It doesn't have fraction of F-35 cross section. That is just one of many delusional lies and projections of Russians. BTW: Su-57 cross section is the same as F/A-18, what isn't even real stealth plane. And again. Fanboys regularly forget about ECM.
1
@Vico649 Yes. People made up other half themselves. Even if there is literally no secret to what did happen. Whole drama with detecting F-35 in Syria is because it wasn't doing combat mission and as such it was not operating in stealth mode. And it still surprised Russians. Mentally inept people still bought that as made up victory.
1
@marshalljulie3676 That it has open reflector, because it was not participating in the combat operation. For operational reasons stealth planes must be detectable during transit. Plus, because long range radar can detect stealth plane, it doesn't mean that it can target it. In real combat operation they would not operate without jamming. So even that "advantage" is debatable. Russian propaganda of course love to exaggerate well known facts (physics), while ignoring well known facts (strategy).
1
@astro2456 Fun fact. Stealth was not a obligatory part in the Joint Strike Fighter project. It just bonus of fact that its creators also make Raptor.
1
@David_D.15 West can track stealth planes. It is why they know that Su-57 is a cope.
1
@David_D.15 No. At least not during combat mission. S-400 is just slightly improved S-300. Not that far ago one was destroyed by a drone. US combat doctrine would first scan everything from range. Grawer not only jam but also locate all radars in range. Then they would spam HARM's, until everything is dead. Then they carefully would do intrusions finishing off everything what could potentially survive. Of course with combination of jamming and stealth. Then finally they carpet bomb everything and ground forces only do clean up the dead bodies. Typically first month of combat is purely air campaign. F-35 can do all steps of this operation. Except the last part.
1
@David_D.15 Fortunately Russia is a third world country. Only reason why they still hold is because they fight with one of poorest nations in Europe. And no. Russia do not fight with NATO. Russia mostly fight with they own delusions and propaganda. When in reality they are most likely on same level as forces of Saddam. Who at the time was forth "strongest" army. Most of they hardware is actually resurrected projects from the 90's. Russia objectively lost ability to develop modern hardware. It is not a secret what S-400 is. So Su-27/30/34/35 or T-72/90.
1
@astro2456 F-35 is actually extremely agile. Whole idea of it being flying Turkey was nonsense made by weirdo pretending to be aviation expert on Russia Today. Americans just do not put much attention to it as it is not as important anymore, in modern combat. Something what even Chinese realized. It isn't hard to detect stealth plane during peace time.
1
@behshadsamimi3180 Yes. Everyone say that, until Americans dismantle it. Despite myths spread by vatniks, Saddam absolutely did have mainstream Soviet hardware of the time. Both tanks and AA. Only without few experimental platforms. In reality Russians were terrified by what they see. Most today armies doesn't really go above that level.
1
@GegeDxD Lol cope. Why people don't understand that stealth planes do not always fly in stealth mode. Why US would hide own presence on allied territory, risking friendly fire? Simple logic, seriously.
1
@hatehipocracy9429 Person who shot down F-117 was clear what did happen. Third world countries buying outdated junk from Russia. May pretend it isn't the case.
1
@reachforthesky1576 S400 is not capable to detect a drone. Russian cope and delusions are outstanding.
1
@augusttuesdaystirling And you elaborate. I do not debate with hollow wiseman.
1
@MuhammedAdeshola There is no anymore.
1
I'm fairly sure they are. Stealth planes shouldn't be invincible during peace operations. Usually flying on they own territory, they give a signal for they own systems.
1
@col_shanelol4659 Only marginally smaller. There is a reason why US plan to discontinue it.
