Short answer: West was enabling China in last few decades and ignoring Russia in last decade. As result Axis of Evil grow, when West was entangled in petty disagreements over misguided US politics in Middle East.

@michaelm3691 Hypotheses 1 is not a hypothesis. It is the reason why Putin is dumbest human on this planet. Hypothesis 2 is unlikely. That would be a thing only after Trump win election.

@scottbonata5145 There would be no Nuclear War. Only dumbest of people believe that. Chinese said Putin hard no in that and Russia has not enough working nukes to destroy the West, let alone West and China at the same time.
