  2. It is definition of bad 90's anti-hero. If you want example of unusual paragon, then it is Twilight Sparkle from MLP. WAIT! Let my explain. Thing is about that show that almost all protagonists were villains in the past. That include not only obvious like Luna and Discord, but in fact both Celestia and Cadence did have shady aspects of they history. Not to mention that members of main 6 were in fact largest assholes in Equestria, with each having dedicated episodes about that. Speaking about Twilight herself, it is implied that she is basically a hair of Dark Lord, not to mention a psychopath with OCD. But because she put lot of work into learning about friendship she become paragon of it, inspiring not only her friends to improve themselves, but also other and even some villains.   11.  @arteriop8910  Generally I find out that separation of such from mythology is best solution. In short myths and believes in the world is the same as ours, but entities themselves are not. If you make clear that used names are only close approximations or even clarify why are incorrect, it actually remove main issue of misinformation. What is core reason why people tend to be offended.

  12. Sort off. Snakes and by extension other reptilian always have strong psychological reaction in humans. Because from one hand snakes are deadly and those who didn't respect them died, but at the same time if someone could master them could vastly profit from that (venom can be used as medicine). It lead to specific symbolical love-hate relations between humans and snakes on steroids.

(though I could misremember things ere) This case is special, because primal sin isn't wrongdoing in regular way, but a natural state of the humanity. Yes, we suffer because of that. But without it we wouldn't even know that, as it is literally mater of possessing or not of the soul. Which is a sin, so in this sense we inherit the sin... our humanity from our parents.

  23. What people commonly don't get is that Lovecraft based his idea on paranoid view on the religion. In fact most mythologies are equally twisted, even if pop-culture and stingy religious people largely sanitized that. But in fact some description from Bible or other myths are totally bonkers. There is a reason why angels tend to say "shall not fear" and fact that Loki was mother of Odin eight legged horse or that Athena born by literally breaking off Zeus skull. And fairy tales aren't much different. Even if they are made for kids and so fallow weird dream logic. They commonly also have nightmarish elements, to point that there is whole Dark Fairy Tale genre, where usually all those "cute" things try manipulate or kill people (just watch Pan's Labyrinth).

General idea is that world is really crappy place and people usually fight only for survival instead any epic adventures. Usually without real hope for the future. Still contrary to popular believe people can be happy locally, even if for short time. Good example of this theme is Warhammer, bad edgy 90's BS.

But later it become used to describe broad category of wild elemental deities and overpowered monsters such as Lindworm or Wyvern. Here it is worth to mention that most famous and most stereotypical (gold hording) dragon is Fafnir who actually is a dwarf, who in Nordic mythologies were also a deities (earth elementals specifically). Being a deity is in fact most constant trait even in many cases overshadowing snake part. For example in Journey to the West white dragon Bai Longma spend way more time as a horse and later human then actual serpent. Anyway, even if most elemental deities are serpentine some also appear as birds (Phoenix, Suzaku, Rok, Geruda, Ziz, etc) or other types of beasts (like Behemot, Byakko, etc), also a "sacred steeds" (Unicorns, Griffins, Kirins, Burak, etc) and of course human. In fact it is quite possible that smith/knight defeating dragon in legend dating to Proto-Indo-Eurpeans as storm deity was a dragon himself.

It is in heroic, but there are also epic protagonists (multiple characters fulfilling role at giving time, in short GoT) or independent protagonists what only observe the story giving us perspective, despite not being part of the action (examples are rare so Skull Man TV series).

Unfortunately all adaptations of this story are flawed. -Original movie is closest to proper adaptation, but it fall short in many places. -TV series is actually for kids and has many cool ideas. But was vastly sanitized. -Miniseries suffer on off graphic choice and cut rabbit mythology because creator did not understand its importance. Unfortunately that also include finale. For example art installation showing reflection of Rainbow, was what actually what triggered Fiver. As he understand that colony was worshiping Prince of Rainbows (rabbit Satan). Also big point of the original was that General Woundwort incorrectly assumed that Bigwig was leader of the colony, Ignoring Hazel what lead to his doom. When Bigwig refuse the confrontation and take hits, it confuse Woundwort. But when he say that such are orders of his leader. It is when he realize that he failed. This adaptation completely fail in this dialogue.

  43. People overthink it. Grimdark is subgenre of Dark Fantasy. Dark Fantasy is genre using horror themes (so dark worlds full of decay, monsters and threats), but protagonist for who zombie apocalypses are Tuesday. Good example here is Witcher series. Grimdark just put Dark Fantasy into more realistic road, with protagonist who despite being badass still is just insignificant and fragile part of greater world (but not as defenseless as in horror), as such all horrific threats are consistent threat to survival of everyone. Low Fantasy (and history) generally isn't Grimdark, because there are no ultimate threat to humanity. Humanity is usually threat to itself, so our faith is still in our hands. In Grimdark it is not.

  49. It is worth to mention that dragons are elemental deities, so fact that hero defeating them is usually storm god (if not straight brother) should drew more gray picture of those beings. But because evil dragons usually don't give a shit going full beast mode, when good dragons tend to pose as humans. It give incorrect picture of actual alignment.
