If someone wounder who losing source code is a big deal.. well.. games work in so called machine code, what is a transcription of the source code. Problem is that minor differences in transcribing program, or some random factors may cause huge differences in the machine code even if it would work in almost identical way. As such when source code is lost it is not easy to reverse engineering it. Sometimes it is even easier to remake game from scratches just making it look identical to sample. It is what they did in case of one of Kingdom Heart games after they lose source code.
