A distinction used to be made between science, or any system which can present falsifiable evidence, to use the Karl Popper definition, and scientism, or the attempted application of the principles of science outside of science per se. Strictly speaking, at this point I think we're talking more about the compulsory aesthetics of scientism. Spot on about the need for abstract theories.
