It wouldn't be a brother's war like the ACW, but nobody can really say that the Chinese of the 2020s are entirely strangers. Every male Millennial in China and the former West has gamed online with a group of males who include people in the opposite camp. This effect was probably at its apex in the era of games with built-in Latin alphabet chat features. China after Deng and before Xi was more free than the West in economic and most personal terms, and somebody who got into a time machine and went back to the China of Hu Jintao from a country like Australia would no doubt be blown away by the amount of freedom people had by any definition. I know I picked up a handful of Simplified characters and Mandarin words, and I don't doubt many more than my proportion of Chinese men have picked up thirteen Latin characters and four to seven English sentences. I have no doubt that the pool of men who have made the rank of colonel or the equivalent or higher in both militaries spent several hours a week together in some portion of the period of their lives between elementary school and just after college in online spaces with the boys who became the men who ended up leading the opposing force. The Chinese Communist Party has had since Deng a significant element of the business improvement area to it. Prior to Xi, my sense is that things were heading toward more of a Greek city states and Rome sort of conclusion between America and China.

I wouldn't put a Russo-Chinese pipeline beyond the realm of possibility.
