A massive W for the region as a whole would be the extension of 1435 mm railways from Egypt past the rapids. These could then twin the 1067mm railways through Sudan and forking to link up with the concurrent extension of the existing 1435 gauge tracks in Ethiopia to the east. Dirt roads could then be used to bring up the materials to connect what is now the southern terminus of the 1067mm gauge track in South Sudan with the eastern terminus of the 600mm track in DRC with a 1435 mm gauge line. The 600 mm gauge railway could be used to twin itself with 1435 mm line running westward, with dirt roads used to bring materials south to the northern railhead of the 1000 mm gauge railway in central DRC. Concurrent to the extension of 1435mm tracks in Egypt, the existing 1067 mm gauge tracks running from Maputo in southern Mozambique through Zimbabwe and Zambia into DRC could be twinned in 1435 mm. Dirt roads used to bring up the materials to extend the 1435 mm tracks to the southern terminal of the 1000 mm gauge railway in central DRC. The two projects would meet somewhere along the this 1000 mm central DRC railway line. Ultimately they would allow for a standard gauge railway carriage to travel from Alexandria to Maputo.
