No homicide pockets - well, Nunavut is some years as murdery as St. Louis, but, it only takes a few murders with their population for it to look that way. Definitely better place to incorporate. Definitely worse place to develop. Better place to live? Depends. Probably about even for brokes and the rich, and a bit worse, overall, for the middle class, especially employees. Personally, I don't see Canada surviving as a country on the map in the medium run due to its slow failure as a nation since the 1960s, but this is my optimism speaking, another theory is that it will just become increasingly authoritarian as it succumbs to the same geographical determinism that made Russia a secret police state. The failure of Canada as a nation is even something acknowledged by the Prime Minister. Nobody would refer to Somalia as a "post-state nation." It is a failed state. The Somalis know they are Somalis, speak Somali, have their culture, heritage, and lineages close to heart - "the soul of Somalia is poetry" - and are plainly a nation, but did not make a state work, at least not since the 1990s .A "postnational state" is thus plainly a euphemism for a failed nation. You don't see America taking down statues of George Washington. This is not necessarily a bad or a good thing, but it is obviously a thing.

  2. Given Canada has medical assistance in dying for mentally ill minors and mass graves of indigenous children, I don't think it really has a moral leg on which to stand in this argument.

  5.  @VoIcanoman  Canada doesn't have hard constitutional protections for any individual rights. This is because of Section One and the notwithstanding clause of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which, when push comes to shove, negate absolutely everything else in the document, including all those paragraphs of blather about minority education "rights." If you remember that bullshit in the 2010s Quebec was pulling with Jewish men and Muslim women where it was placing limits on their ability to wear their respective skullcaps and scarves, in America, that would be an open and shut violation of their First Amendment rights as speakers.

I remember speaking with a German guy who made the point that it was the targeted removal of citizenship rights as a whole from minority populations by the NSDAP, within which category firearm rights had been included by the Weimar Republic, not the specific disarming of the Gypsies and the Jews per se, which preceded that country's....particular unpleasantness.

  12. Exactly. America has a civic nationalism - founded on a common set of civic values - rather than an ethnic nationalism - founded on a common racial origin. Not that there is anything wrong with countries like Israel, of course. Though France I would argue despite the extent of the genocide of regional minorities during the Revolution is actually also more based on a civic rather than an ethnic nationalism.

  14. mostly it is that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is fundamentally a meaningless document as it is bookended by Section 1 and the notwithstanding clause, meaning Canadian permanent residents etc. lack any hard constitutional protections for rights of any kind. This is why for instance it is possible for Quebec to harass Jewish men and Muslim women in ways which in America would be considered an open and shut violation of their First Amendment rights. Of course given the guy who took that colossal shit on these provinces was a piece of shit who committed genocide by the definition agreed to at the time but for some reason continues to have statues of himself in parks and his name on airports, it sort of figures.
