The "confederate" flag actually is pretty comparable to the keffiyeh. Both are regional symbols, but both in some contexts could understandably and justifiably be taken as symbols of hatred or a desire to intimidate.

The keffiyeh is like the BFANV. It is often displayed as a symbol of regional sentiment with no intent to intimidate or menace. However, when it comes to people who do not have blood in West Bank or Gaza, or whose families do not come from there, or in the context of a demonstration at which chants for genocide are taking place, one does have to ask why a person would make use of it.

@corychallice7705 The Charter doesn't protect anything. Any province can always invoke the notwithstanding clause, or else use section one if they want to deal with language nonsense. People in this province just generally support the principle that a person ought to be free to speak her or his mind. Hard constitutional protections for individual rights are not really a thing outside of America and Japan.

@corychallice7705 Hate speech is free speech, but the hate speech law is federal, and it is not realistic to expect the federal government ever to reflect a single civic value actually possessed by the local majority of any given province or region, because hardly any regional or provincial civic values so much as rhyme with those of the province next door. The two speech things to fix provincially are 1) get rid of the 100m abortion clinic protest ban and 2) bring back binding faith based arbitration, and allow all faiths to go through the procedure to register arbitrators under it. If some guy in Quebec says something about Islam and ends up in the slammer for longer than your average rapist, I don't care. They don't believe in speech rights over there, so it's like getting worked up about people not having privacy on the internet in mainland China.

@susieq1386 Provincially, Premier Ford is a complete milquetoast, but...that's the strategy that kept Premier Davis in so long, and while Premier Harris had his heart in the right place, the problem is that that caused him to become demonized by the same entrenched special interests he had tried to fight, who were able to wear down all the progress he had made.

The problem with that is it causes the demonization of the real conservative for decades thereafter by the special interests, then his good work is undermined when they are able to work on the public mood. It isn't sexy to govern somewhere between a marshmallow slightly tainted by raspberry syrup and Bill Davis, but that's what is needed long term.

Spoke with a guy who said he was from Hungary and agreed it was real and that he agreed with Hungary getting thrown out of the visa-free agreement, as in his view it was mostly Gypsies using it. Also anybody I've actually known IRL from The Ukraine described the place as less of a country than a meme of corruption.

The online hate bill if anything makes sense to maintain, since removing it would unfairly favouritize the critics of Islam in Quebec it was plainly intended to target, given the Quebec antiJew antiMuslim law passed a court challenge that it had correctly violated the individual speech rights of Jews and Muslims in Quebec. At most the online hate law would be amended to state clearly that the notwithstanding clause was being invoked to ban criticism of Islam in Quebec, therefore avoiding providing the impression that the Conservatives are taking sides in an intraprovincial issue.

@McLovin1759 If somebody chooses to use a symbol in a context which is hard to mistake as intended for hatred, then it seems reasonable that a certain stigma would attach to that symbol. Since there are no hard protections for speech rights in this part of the world - federally, given the complete absence of support for individual rights in Quebec, this puts individual rights including speech rights firmly on the far right of politics - in practice I do not see why were somebody to use one of those symbols in an analogous fashion to the way the keffiyeh has been used at too many demonstrations since October 7 that it would not meet a similar sort of sanction.

I disagree. The only reason faith based binding arbitration was removed by the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals was because those foreign bastards in Europe were crying about it. If anything, it ought to be allowed back on the books, on the general principle that our way has always been to extend considerations for minorities originally developed to keep the Catholics from rioting too hard about being second class citizens to every other conceivable minority. It is secularism that is against our tradition on this side of the river.

When offered an opportunity by her former party leader to make an apology for the only way some of them could be taken, she refused. However, to return to the "confederate" flag analogy, just because when a bunch of Klan guys wave one around while burning a cross they are clearly making use of it as a hate symbol, this does not invalidate it as a regional sentiment symbol in a nonhate context. Same thing with a keffiyeh. It's just a Palestinian cultural thing in a context that is just about Palestinian culture.

The kids are at best enjoying a little urban camping. The issue is at best retarded. Sure, Israel is a race based state, but, that's a lot of countries, and we're not not going to be in the same alliance structure as them. Israel made the decision as a sovereign state to reoccupy the smaller kind-of country next door in response to getting terror attacked. Warzones aren't nice. Middle Eastern countries don't always see the other side as fully human when they're at war. That's just how it is.

Things did not evolve the same way in every region of every province out of the 1830s-1950s nationalism we cooked up that was basically rights of freeborn Englishmen in white bread white sugar mode for Protestants and in brown bread brown sugar mode for everybody else - starting with the Catholic Irish because there were limits on how well we could keep order among them by dispensing beatings, but there was also no way in fuck any Loyalist was going to put up with exact equal rights for practitioners of Popery - and exported to every other region of every other province. The thing about that nationalism was that unlike enough other colonial nationalisms, it was enthusiastically imperialist, and the Empire was multiethnic and had free movement of labour and capital, tariff of bad roads notwithstanding. Toronto-area multiculturalism is a melting mosaic set in the mortar of the unspoken assumption that every day is Empire Day. I've done the thing where I was sad that other provinces and regions don't want to do things that way, and I'm over it - but I will still hasbara for multiculturalism. In the form that it exists in this region, it is a thing that is worth it to conserve.

There needs to be certain norms set and enforced for the use of some spaces in order for them to continue to be able to function in the capacity for which they exist, of course, and there need to be certain norms for how one conducts oneself around minors which ought to be enforced, but...really, it would be nice if we lived in a country that had hard constitutional protections for freedom of speech instead of one particular region whose normative civic values are based on an ideology intrinsically incompatible with the rights of the individual. Vive le Quebec Libre in case you can't guess which one.

@susieq1386 oh the federal Liberals admitted defeat when they increased the carbon tax. They knew that their path back in was to fix cost of living in the Toronto suburbs. Had they had the intention of forming government in 2025, they would not have acted to make their decisive issue worse. Because PP has avoided being an idiot and trying to get seats in Quebec, the Bloc will pick up its own ridings again, and act as an insurance policy against any late game Liberal surge. It would be nice if a vote brought down the government a bit sooner, of course, but I do not think that will happen.

depends on how you define things for the first part of that. but puh tay toe put taw toe If Pakistan is legitimate for representing former British subjects of the Muslim faith who were administered separately within the Colony of India, then Israel is legitimate for representing former Ottoman subjects of the Jewish faith who were administered separately on an empire-wide basis. The Greek Orthodox dhimmi got Greece. The Armenian Orthodox dhimmi got Armenia. Nothing unfair about the Jewish dhimmi getting Israel.

The big thing is this, on this side of the world, almost everywhere is multiethnic, often mixed ethnicity majoritarian. The idea of an ethnostate would be silly on this side of the world, and the fact that it would be silly means people don't always stop to think that the other side of the world works differently. An ethnostate is not an intrinsically bad thing.
