  1. Abstract and anecdotal; I interviewed last week to become an American citizen like my sons. The woman who questioned me had nails painted like American flags. She asked me why don't I bring my 87-year-old mother who has dementia and other pre-existing conditions to the States rather than spend most of my recent time in Canada caring for her. After I replied, "She could live another ten years, and we can't afford the medical insurance," the interview turned on me. I didn't lie. Even though I was willing to swear that I would defend America over other countries, it would be untrue to say that on a mass scale life is better in America. I shook her hand on my way out and it felt like a dead fish.
