  1. There is some interesting work by Christopher Leinberger, once President of the Urban Land Institute. Malls and their environs can be considered as urban cores. These have specific states of decline or expansion (as with offices and other commercial development) depending on which generation they are from, and these pretty much fit the same patterns for most North American cities. I found this interesting because I did not think of it on my own, most planners do not know it and it is fairly good at predicting development patterns.
