Thom Hartmann nails relevant historical context here. The kind of thing we do.

@COASTA LOECSTA Maybe he escaped unharmed.

Here in Canada, there is a bill under consideration that would ban the wearing of religious items for government workers. How is that the business of a government that is supposed to represent all of us?
7
@johnwright9372 Then what happens?
5
I think I know what you mean about Evangelicals after reading Chris Hedges "American Fascists, Citizen Harrison? The people he describes in that book are not Christians by any stretch. They have been pandered to in several obvious Trump administration staffing choices.
5
I think of him as crazy, Jimi Harris.
5
"Hatriot," Howard Patrick. Good one.
4
@lawrencehamm1478 I was hoping to chat him into an answer to the same question.
4
@henrygarciga Mr. Tul is correct. The cold war is so entrenched in American politics that I had to swear that I had not become a communist since the interview in my naturalization ceremony to become an American. Really? What were the odds. Have they ever approached you? Would that have something to do with Russia?
2
@RichRich1955 Thanks for the recommendation. This is a tough one because people will always find food and shelter more compelling than the future.
2
Well put, Marina A. After living in the States, everyone having access to medical care without being financially ruined can be huge, though.
2
He's no Roosevelt, Richard Owens. God help us.
2
Thank you for reporting this. I had heard of it regarding a few species and had not realized the scale. I wonder why this isn't all over the news?
2
@k1dork I always use the "everybody" room to make a political statement of solidarity and then wonder if anyone thinks I'm a transvestite as I walk out.
2
@k1dork Same here.
2
@TheTamriel So now you feel you are a good person despite your country's role in this. Neato.
1
@TheSignetGamer So bad that we need a new word for it.
1
I don't find this conjecture implausible. The thinking seems excellent. What is our reason for suddenly withdrawing from this war? I wonder if most of us have a clue why we got into it? When? How? Are we so dumbed down that we don't mind if there is a reason or not? Perhaps in general, we are; how can that be changed? Thank you for reporting this.

So we should change the economy to protect the earth, Richard Monroe?
1
Richard Monroe, You are correct. This would impact some places more than others. I live in Alberta where vast numbers are in denial about what it means for us to expand our oil production because they need the jobs. There was a protest at our Legislature on the first day of the summit in Poland, but it was three "protesters" with bags containing 7,000 identical printed letters of support for getting the pipeline through. Small, but that was it. There were no opposing marchers, at least that arrived on the news. We have a provincial "Climate Leadership Plan" that will provide us with rebates for energy efficient light bulbs and a carbon tax. The plan is silent on the environmental devastation of the tar sands. Maybe economies will become more local and change in other ways. There are a lot of things that we don't need in the marketplace. We spend energy producing things that people don't need. The FIRE sectors seem not to build anything and perpetuate the system that we have.

This is a good question, Joseph Henry. It would be difficult to answer without looking at geography and how many and which people we study for each country. It would be interesting to see cross sections.
1
"The outsourcing of policy." Good one.
1
Everything, P. A. Andrews?
1
I hope that we do it strategically with dignity and without betraying any promises we have made, Thomas Binney. We have failed at these things in the past.
1
Razor Ramone, I suddenly regret my years of refusing to watch the news. Ukraine gave up nukes in exchange for NATO protection? Would they have had the security to be left alone? I am assuming you don't mean a border wall to keep out migrants. You are right.
1
I wonder if this is as significant as Glass Steagall and allows banks to take more risks, what does it do precisely? Was this an act of Congress? What did they do?
1
My information on Chinese domestic environmental policy may be outdated. Thanks. I will have to re-educate myself. We should emulate what the Germans are doing. Built in finance mechanism. As a planner I have seen more and more developers use being green to market their products. It seems on an upswing in some markets.
1
@markwilcons6397 Isn't that every person?
1
@coachhannah2403 I was probably just arguing semantics. There is both good and evil in every person. I do know precisely the kind of person you mean (maybe, it is subjective) and wish that they would magically disappear.
1
@coachhannah2403 Well put.
1
You may be singing to the choir, Thom Hartman.

I had not made the connection between Trump's apparently illogically annoying so many countries with trade wars as a method to forestall the inevitable cyclic recession. It's a short-term strategy and seems likely to backfire. He is acting as if there is no tomorrow. Other countries will soon have more of choice not to play along with American global domination. Let's face it; We break our contracts and have made the concept of international law a farce. There must be better business partners.
1
Larry Aldama You seem to have taken leave of your senses.
1
@Jlh450 I am puzzled why so many people like him.
1
Scary, Julie Ann Myers. I hope we change our ways quickly.
1
@quadq6598 I am not sure it is condescending. I have been talking to random people (here in Alberta) about climate change and many don't see it yet.
1
@kennethdavis6893 At a keg party via beer pong, it looks like.
1
Erik Hartshorn, He looks like he can spell.
