  1. If I were in Germany, I might want to choose China over the US after the recent actions on Nordstream 2. The US is alienating many long term allies. For what? I wonder if the two could be related. They can't sanction the world.

  11. As a US citizen, I just liked and then unliked your comment. Although you are factually correct, I would not want to see us relegated to the dustbin of history by becoming number two. We sure have been asking for that lately by our greedy hegemonic behaviour. I don't feel that my government represents me with all the questionable sanctions and wars of economic intervention.

Let's both watch this and, at the same time, see or work toward seeing a path to stopping it, whatever general form it takes. We are at the pinnacle of human knowledge and technology. It could be my bias, but our enemy does not seem highly evolved. Do we just not give a fuck? (I don't speak that way much in my everyday life, but find being an anonymous internet figure liberating.) I wonder about the accuracy of my view on world news and worry that we may be in trouble over an unformed populace. The real story is not often on TV. Things are getting worse.

If they were not corrupt at the top, wouldn't that create leverage to put the profits into public goods and services instead of sucking the money out of the economy to sit in offshore accounts as we have in the west? If the government owned the banks, would there be any "zombie banks" as there are here in the US?

  28.  @covertpuppytwo3857  That isn't why they will do it. There will be economic benefits to many countries that have been deliberately marginalized by the IMF and World Bank. As long as China doesn't exploit them as we have. I have read that so far, they have restructured some defaults to keep them afloat rather than seize assets in those cases, so they might not.

  37. We don't have bread lines in Edmonton, except for the homeless and poor. I just spoke to a woman stocking shelves at the supermarket mumbling "here go ahead and steal." I asked her about it, and found out that there has always been theft, but it has been crazy lately. They have changed the doorway configuration at my Safewasy to prevent all of the people from doing the old "running out of the grocery store with a cartful of grocieries and running away because they have no money trick.? She said "People think it's just the econnomy, hut this may be the more significant clue to rising grocery prices? It is the economy but not exclusively for the reaspons you think?

  39. It does not seem analogous to compare a lab accident that resulted in one death to the spread of a global pandemic. It must be statistically correct that mistakes will occasionally happen in all labs. Viruses are not political and can originate in any country. I wonder if this is in response to Trump's egregious comments on China's role in the pandemic? It may seem unfair that people in China be compelled to prove that the virus was not started in a lab. Still, if I were in that position, I would be as transparent as I possibly could, as others will lie for their own political reasons. The only way to manage such disasters well is to stick to facts. We have never seen an event like COVID 19 in our lifetimes, and are sure to be learning from the experience for decades. Science will demand a study of how all governments handled it and the results thereof.

  42. June 9, 2019, half a million protesters took to the streets in Hong Kong. I doubt that frisson could be generated by Taiwan or Donald Trump alone. The incidents mentioned are few for that level of public activism. I wonder what a public opinion poll of HK citizens would tell us or if what they think would matter at all? To outsiders looks like a second wave of colonialism by decree?

  43. The British treated their colonial subjects who were not white and their native citizens of the lower social classes with brutality. America is worse in scale because of the global population increase since that time. It's a different scale. Although it is not recognized as colonialism, which would give them at least some incentive to keep people fed and housed to a minimal level when they chose not to kill them. They needed the workers. Globalism has changed that as there are many countries in poverty where people will work for $2 a day. China has succeeded in improving the economic status of her people, while those in the US have become worse off over the last two decades.

  50. Are you suggesting that anthrax and Ebola were created or studied for germ warfare at Fort Detrick? It's as suspect as Trump's allegations toward China on the Coronavirus. What both fail to include is evidence.
