  1. You should write a book, Nicholas Clark. This is a compelling story. Your grandfather reminds me of my dad. Although there are a lot more real estate developers than notable physicists. Similar achieving, difficult personalities. My dad died twelve years ago. In some ways I am proud of the things that he achieved, although time points to the impermanence of anyone's life achievements. When I think of him, I often think of the challenges of having a father like that and wonder how they shaped my character. It is difficult to see objectively.

  4. You sound like my oldest son, who at 19 had dropped out of college and failed the drug test to get into the military. He worked his way up to bartender in a high-end restaurant and has made pretty good money, but has tired of being a bartender and is about to return to college. If he is like me (who did not get my undergraduate degree until I was 32) he is more likely to finish this time. I ended up with career achievements that make me happy. What I am saying (in too many words) is that this may seem critical now, but at 19 your life is only just beginning. Keep the faith.

  5. It was not my intention, Tom. I was thinking of a few times in my own life when I became "unstuck." This is just what worked for me. There are probably many ways.

How about, "I love you, but I have so much information that you get on badly with women (including me) that dating would be a miserable experience for both of us?" (There is a lot more to "genetic material" than combining or not combining it.) Or, "I'm gay?" How about, "I like your tats, but I don't think a meth-head would make a good father?"

  16. Fine. Why do we care, John Doe? If you want to be married in this way, good for you. If you ever want to be married in a different way, you will change. I have not had sex with another person in years, but I would find it difficult to think of myself as "married to celebacy." I think of sex as one of the best things ever. It is the relationships that come with it that have gone south for me and left me without. Once I got used to it, it mattered less and less. Still. :)

  17. If you are, in fact, married to celebacy, you should not put women through a "how to be happily married" seminar. They might get the wrong idea. This must be you in your life coaching role....but I had not planned on getting married or thought much about it until you brought it up. Actually, if you are happy, I am happy for you. It is just difficult for me to find celebacy ideal and your comment reminded me of sex, which I don't have. I am able to manage this by not thinking about if much. I apologise for being snarky. Your commnent made me think of sex and celebacy. I am less thrilled about these things than you. It is a personal choice and I am happy for you.

  22. Yet understandable. This shifts the blame from the kid taking that first marshmallow. I don't think that this is the way to promote desirable qualities. I may have misspoken when I referred to "the social contract." I was thinking that for children, this could mean a reliable expectation from life, not of Rousseau. I should have called it something different.

  23. I had a moderately wasted youth. I made the best of it by working harder than my colleagues in my 30's. I can't say that I regret one of the few times of my life where I felt like a bohemian. It is harder to do that once compelling goals kick in.

  27. One mismatch between me and probably anyone would be that, even when I try, I often leave a trail of clutter behind me. When I am busy and thinking about something else, I do not even notice clutter. On the other hand, I am scrupulously clean. Anything that would cause an infection or make a smell, I have no tolerance for. I have varying degrees of clutter lately, but when I was more busy, having weekly or biweekly house cleaners was a big help. This has been the way I live with others and share a space withour conflict. The other four things....mauybe good on, but impossible to know without trying it. At times, I wish I was like the many people who can tolerate sex without involvement (most men and quite a few women). I need to be in a committed, caring relationship or it just would not work for me.

  31. This would not work for me, Strategic Thinker I don't even have a poker face, so I am too poor of a liar not to tell the truth (or what I think is the truth) almost always. Also, what I did as a profession would not have been good work if I had not always been as objective and truthful as I could muster. Unless it was a farce. Just as there are "fake scientists", there are planners who lie for political power, wealth and social respect. The results are usually plans hardly worth implementing.

  32. It does seem like a good idea to try many different things, Consciousness knows itself through itself. This is my approach as well. One of my sons calls them "happy pills" and chastises me as if I had decide to take heroin. There is no high for me from them. They stave off the me severe lows and it is a price I am willing to pay. There is suicide in my family.
