  2. These weapons are most famous for mass shootings of the innocent. I am one of the people who has been saying it because I could not think of a reason why a civilian would need a weapon designed to mow down a crowd of people. If it were my store and I was there alone facing a mob of looters, I might, though. I wonder what would have happened if the looters stormed the jewelry store and were shot in that way? Legal impunity does not seem likely? I can't think of an example like that. It did protect that store without anyone getting hurt.

  8.  knine1833  I formed my opinion after reading an article on a mass shooting of schoolchildren in Harper's 25 years ago, so I could be mistaken. I do have a sense there are many examples.

  9. ​ knine1833 I am not sure that comparing the total gun violence is a meaningful statistic. The image of a man mowing down a schoolyard of children is compelling. Might he have found a different way?
