  1. I actually unpublished my story of conversion to Orthodoxy off Amazon after an abbess told me I need to re edit it to obey the fifth commandment better! I’m submitting to her in obedience. Crucifying my intellect and impulse to share everything is hard but I can finally SEE the need for it because I want to get as close as possible to Theosis here on earth.

As a former member of a Hindu cult I wonder what I would have said if an Orthodox person had tried to warn me away! Probably, in my pride, “get lost!” Ugh

  14. I’d love for you to go in depth on Gurdgieff, Ouspensky, GE Palmer vis a vis Orthodoxy! I didn’t discover G and O till 2020 and then I tried to grasp their trajectories and influence. I know several now Orthodox people who claim G was formative and very helpful to them. Very thorny..

My husband, a former Deacon, and I are building the Union of All Orthodox Christian Healing Arts Center in our beeswax candle factory/ print mount icon shop in an 8000 square foot warehouse on the highway into Yosemite near St Silouan ROCOR monastery and near St Susanna OCA mission. We’re having a room that will be like a living room for small groups, for counseling (I used to be a cognitive clinical psychologist), Bible study, the Jesus Prayer, daily prayer. It will also be a giftshop for candles, icons, our olive oil (40 trees) art etc. All of our books will be there for sharing and book clubs. The other larger room will be for conferences with invited speakers, exercise, dance, music! And anyone who wants to join me), art shows, etc. We have an encaustic art studio for folks to come and work on their own art projects, encaustic workshops, etc. We have two large infrared saunas and a floatation therapy tank (the Dead Sea in a box) to help people include the body and deepen their stillness in prayer experience. Out our back door we have the Red Hills which is its own ecosystem and microclimate, very desert like in summer with caves for prayer. We just got the property next door to build a mini RV park and Lord willing some permanent Orthodox folks. We want to grow food and maybe have chickens etc. I know it sounds wild but St Elisabeth and St John of SF inspired it. We are only an hour from the myrrh bearing relics of St Sebastian Dabovich who was a great Serbian missionary priest in the Motherlode. We are almost ready to open and pray to be a place for all to come to be loved in Christ. We live there full time in an RV. Come and see! 🙏🏻☦️🙏🏻

Amis’ “A Different Christianity” is pretty interesting…it “helped” me, or so “I” “thought.” Once I decided not to “trust” myself and hew more closely to the writings of the Saints of the Church, I realized I didn’t need that type of “help.” Satanically inspired light can look really pretty…

  19. John!!!! I loved what you said about the encounter with a Saint, and with your Father in the photograph!!! I am praying with photographs of saints lately, especially Fr Seraphim Rose and St John of SF. I feel that I encounter the person almost in a deeper way than in a painted icon! I also gaze at my moms picture and talk to her through it! You know your dear brother finally made a visit to our healing arts center here in central California! He did a live broadcast from here on his way North after getting to say goodbye at the deathbed of Fr Maximos (Vincent Rossi.) still hoping you will come see our candle factory and now fully operational mounted print icon shop, along with checking out the floatation therapy tank (Dead Sea in a box) and the cave we can walk to for prayer!   24. This past Great Lent I asked for and received the Gift of Remembrance of Death. Now I’m struggling not to waste ANY of my precious remaining time to be in Compunction and Repentance with tears on my “intellectual passions.” But they are very ingrained due to my academic background and that of my parents. Both Fordham Chemistry graduates. And my Dad was a Roman Catholic with a mind completely bent by scholasticism. He literally got severe OCD from his endless hours of reading Aquinas etc. He had no supernatural loving faith yet whenever he lost a book of matches in the house he would go nuts yelling about how “God took it!” It was to punish him for certain sins that RC priests in the 60s told him were “ok.” Very sad. Anyway, thank you for this fantastic discussion. I follow your brother religiously! You’ve given me more reasons to quit indulging my intellectually stimulating book buying sprees. I’m going to try to stick with St Joseph the Hesychast and Elder Ephraim, St Isaac the Syrian. And a fantastic book by Irene Hausherr called “Penthos: The Doctrine of Compunction in the Christian East.” It’s ironic though because I only came across that very practical book while on one of my intellectually passionate explorations of the internet!

  25.  @As-fs6qd  I started to go down that rabbit hole and bought at least one or two shelves of books. But then I stopped and realized that G’s “Esoteric Christianity” was a lie, without Christ and without Love. I have many more shelves of real Orthodox books, saints lives, the Patristic Fathers and hesychasts like St Gregory Palamas. I decided to spend my limited time left on earth (I’m 64) pursuing Theosis. I still have much repenting to do and I have begun to taste compunction and weeping in prayer… pursuing Christ doesn’t leave me time to research G anymore. However, I would like to know more about what destroyed Ouspensky. I read that he told his students to go to Mt Athos. Gerald Palmer did…which is why we have the Philokalia in English now.

  29. Hi John! Well, you never got to host a talk between Fr Peter and Fr Maximos (Vincent Rossi). Memory Eternal! He reposed quite quickly after getting a cancer diagnosis a few months ago! Thank God Fr Peter got to visit and say goodbye to Fr Maximos due to my prodding if I may say so without vainglory! He saw him only a few hours before he reposed on the night he visited our Union of All Orthodox Christian Healing Arts Center. He broadcast his current Series 2 Lesson 6 on the Book of Revelations. I still hope and pray that you can visit us too!

I am a devoted student of your brother Fr Peter and I can’t thank him enough for being a good guide in our times! We want to arrange a kick off opening conference for the Center in the Fall and I’m praying about who to try to get to come to speak! There are so many good Orthodox young recent convert evangelists on YouTube now, like David Patrick Harry ( formerly heavily into psychedelic sub culture), Michael Witcoff (a former Mason), in addition to Fr Peter! God is raising up men to preach and teach where our current hierarchs may have failed in their zeal to go along with the State powers in closing churches, etc. Thank you!!!   35. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of G or O! I’d been Orthodox six years! Now 8 and still barely tasting the Wisdom! I’d come out of a Hindu cult so I was very interested in the G phenomenon! I would love an expert to discuss! Robin Amis probably could have but he’s gone…🙏🏻memory eternal!

  38.  @As-fs6qd  I haven’t read Schuon but Guenon and Girard have added to my phronema… have you read the biography of Fr Seraphim Rose? A very recent Orthodox monk who built a monastery in Nor Cal. He died tragically early at age 48 in 1982.

  43. Repentance doesn’t fit in with our dominant western scientistic psychotherapy culture. People are marinated in this culture and its inculcation of “victim hood” and don’t even understand the concept of “sin,” “the passions” or “struggle” against them, which begins with repentance! Thank God I discovered St Isaac the Syrian early on…
