My answer is this: 1) Putin has made some "calculations", and then he came to the conclusion that Russia's Monetary Reserves are NOW able to finance this evil war (his dream of rebuilding the USSR). And also, it was his perception that Western Europe's leadership is NOW weak enough not to oppose his war-games; 2) There's a huge difference between "imperialism" (USSR/RU) & "new-imperialism" (USA/China/Western Europe). The 1st one is based on war, and the 2nd one relies on the power of money & technology...
