Good video and a good list to be aware of. For those of us from the west visiting Japan, let's also be good guests and speak up if other westerners are not. Japan and Japanese people deserve our best.

The train behavior is important. No matter where a visitor is from, act correctly on trains. Visitors too often don't understand how much Japan is not a casual destination or like where foreigners come from. If you want that there are other places. Japan is amazing but definitely about its culture. It fully operates on its culture. If you are interested in that and follow the norms its a very rewarding place to visit. Partner with its culture instead of having main character syndrome about yourself. It matters now because of over tourism.

This is a reminder of the importance of having enough situational awareness when visiting Japan to understand you are in another country as a guest. Instagram traveling is a poor fit in a very structured society like Japan. Go because you are interested in the culture, everything unfolds from the culture in Japan.

Foreign visitors should remember that shrines and temples are still active religious sites, don't be obnoxious and self absorbed when visiting them. It goes back to understanding that you may be on holiday, and you sincerely deserve a pleasant one, but you are a guest and not the main character in Japan. I totally agree about attending cultural opportunities. Don't ruin "hidden spots" by blasting them all over social media. Sorry to be blunt but the quality of travelers at present is a concern for a lot of us right now.

Thank you for another good video! I encourage foreign visitors to actually do their research and not rely on social media by western "influencers" as their only source for information about Japan. Japan is a busy society in progress. I like how quiet the trains are and I would advise to be mindful to use "indoor voices" if talking at all. So, quiet rather than silence. Talking on cell phone on the trains seems like a no no and I agree with that. I would add do remember that in shops and restaurants staff don't really make small talk with customers and places are often busy so be respectful of that as a foreign visitor, that was something unexpected that I learned. And don't exploit places to post them on Instagram, support ethical travel.

Thank you for this important information. It really is important for foreigners to understand the culture of public space and public atmosphere being respectful and peaceful in Japan.

This is a great video! I will share it with people. My rookie mistake was not paying enough attention to how many people in Tokyo and almost walked right into someone. I felt really bad.

Thank you for this information. It helps make better visitors.

Visiting Japan is 100% about the culture, and then that unfolds into the visual experience. It is not a theme park or social media toy. Learn the culture and be a good guest, that is the platform for treasured memories and not "influencers" acting like predators for youtube and instagram clicks at all costs. Its not the kind of place to just go with no understanding of the culture. My personal kawaii experience was talking with elderly Japanese and making a genuine human connection and trying to be a reason for them to speak well of tourists.

Excellent video, thank you. I would add that I used google maps or asked my hotel questions since not only do most people not feel very comfortable speaking English, they are often trying to get to work or school or home or an appointment and I didn't want to delay them. And just because someone works in an area does not mean they know it any better than you do. Also, do your homework on the culture before going and be a good guest in Japan. I can't stress that enough. Cringy or creepy tourist behavior is extremely out of place in Japan and is unfair to the people there. Carry a small plastic bag in your coat or backpack for your trash until you return to your hotel. Tokyo is not Vegas, so there is far more to see then trying to just party in what is a very orderly society. Maybe that is part of why the trains stop running at midnight. Middle eastern and Indian food are also restaurant options.

And they are clean, which is a wonderful change from where most of us live.

I had the same experience but I did have random taxi drivers who only accepted cash and I was not anywhere profoundly rural. Always good to be prepared.

@Cubs3344 Your hotel should be able to change larger notes for you but not necessarily a huge amount all at once since they are not a bank.

@Curious-traveler Morioka shouldn't be over run with Instagrammers etc. Have a good trip! Don't hold me to it but it seemed that sitting on the right side of the shinkansen was the station side for both Sendai and Morioka and seemed to give a view of much of the city as we approached. I am always looking for interesting views.

Second trip coming up. After the first trip I began Japanese language study and reading more about the history and how the culture developed. I plan to continue this for a long time. The more I add to my knowledge the more I feel and wish to show respect to Japanese people and to learn from the cultural values, not just to see new places.

@brianuuuSonicReborn I am beyond grateful to hear this.

Hmm, people are often in a hurry to get to places like work or appointments and Japanese commonly don't really chat with people they don't know. They aren't trying to be rude but bear that in mind. Again, research the culture before you go.

@JapanwithNao You say it much better than me! Many thanks for your wisdom and supporting us.

I did not have a bad meal in Japan and I did eat pasta and Middle Eastern food as well. Definitely research the culture as it seems too many people go who are not really there for the culture and don't have the best trip they could. Indeed be quiet on trains. Not disturbing others in public spaces is one of the strong values in the culture. Hotel prices are indeed increased this year. In Kyoto try to use the new tourist loop buses to free up the regular ones for locals and don't chase or harass geisha for Instagram photos. It's illegal now and even other tourists are angry at the bad behavior. As much as I love Tokyo, I agree its best to branch out to other places.

I was able to easily get the Welcome Suica (28 day limit) at Haneda airport in December but I understand that the regular Suica is still difficult to find. People I know who went in March obtained Pasmo with no difficulty.

I enjoyed conbini store sandwiches on several occasions but there are many other food sources there. I didn't have a bad meal in Japan.

Sapporo is great but indeed bring a warm and windproof jacket and gloves. I went last December and it was too early for snow but I still liked it. I was sad about no snow.....
