It wasn't in the name of religion, it was in the name of the nation. When Ireland became independent in 1922, they needed something that would make them different from Britain and chose the idea of traditional moral purity. "We may be poor and bakward, but we're more spiritually pure than the British", the story went. So unwed mothers had to be hidden from the public because they'd undermine this idea of Irish moral excellence. There was at least one mother and baby home run by the Protestant Church in Dublin and conditions there were not better than in the Catholic ones.
