  1. ​ @jamsng Parallel means along. You swim along the shore rather than towards it. When you get out of the rip current, you can swim toward the shore.

  2. I got tugged into the sea like that suddenly when I was 11. I was scared but managed to swim out. Maybe it wasn't very strong.
