Yeltsin's Russia had the second highest s,,cide rate in the world, a m,,rder rate like in Honduras, and lots of alcoholism. The life expectancy for men actually fell under 60 in 1995. Many people lost their jobs and those who did have work didn't get paid for months or even years. A part of the country, Chechnya, had declared itself an independent republic and the Russian govt was powerless to do anything about it. This is how chaotic Russia was in the 1990s, yet there was nothing comparable to the crowds of homeless and addicts in the streets like in the US and UK.
