Check what happened to Hiei. It took a lot of hits by US heavy and light cruisers as well as destroyers to just slow it down enough to be found and sunk by aircraft the next morning.

@davidknowles2491 They helped. But Akatsuki was smothered by Atlanta's return fire and San Francisco ceased firing at some point (when Hiei opened up on Atlanta?)

I haven't heard about USN using naval mine warfare around Guadalcanal during the campaign fought over the island. Even if it did I haven't heard of any successes so I guess it wasn't used effectively. Given the strategic disposition once Henderson Field was in operation it seems to me it would make a lot of sense to lay a large minefield in the Ironbottom Sound to protect the Lunga Point anchorage and prevent night surface naval bombardment of the crucial airfield by the IJN and sink or damage a few ships in the process. Any idea why wasn't it pursued seriously, and would it have been a good idea? (Was the area to cover too large? Not enough foresight and later time to bring the mines? Would the minefield be vulnerable to clearing efforts by the Japanese holding the Western part of the island? Could the IJN come from the East, around the island of Florida, shell the airfield and still escape dawn airstrikes?). It seems to me it would have saved the USN the trouble of, as well as all the losses incurred in - at least most of the night surface actions off Savo Island.

@andrewszigeti2174 Well - the Kirishima would have obliterated the sole light cruiser with 14in gunfire looong before the cruiser could sink it (as Hiei historically crippled USS Atlanta).
