  2. Regarding the first question: carrier air operations are dependent on weather conditions. Apart from RN night attacks were not feasible or at least not very effective (and incurred higher operational losses) and even in daytime you need relatively calm weather and not too strong winds. At rough weather a surface force could, with a bit of skill and/or luck sneak up to a carrier group - which is kinda what happened to HMS Glorious. And 2 destroyers were not sufficient to protect her, or indeed themselves, obviously.
