  2.  @emergencylowmaneuvering7350  Hawker is long gone - merged like 3 times since 1966. If you count mergers probably no major aircraft manufacturers ever went completely out. That being said - apart from those you listed, Mitsubishi, Kawasaki, Fiat, Sukhoi, Ilyushin, Tupolev and Mig are still around.

Even the poor Air Force of the small Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was attempting to offer resistance by day 42 of the 78-day 1999. NATO aerial campaign against the country. And even then it only stopped voluntarily - to conserve assets to oppose a possible ground invasion, or to use them post-war.

  8. I think they had far more friends than you think through "enemy of my enemy is a friend". Iran, China, Russia with its ex-Soviet proxies and even the duplicitous Pakistan coming to mind... At least most of them were none too keen on US having military bases in Afghanistan.

  9. I don't see any reason for all out war. Nothing meaningfuly changed compared to what's been going on in Eastrrn Ukraine since separatism started. Had Russia intended to invade it would have done so suddenly, with the element of surprise. Donbass pro-Russian separatist entities were Russian creations in the first place so recognition brings little practical change. It is simply Russia drawing a line in the sand. Ukraine is too weak to militarily contest the recognition and the West won't turn a local low intensity conflict in which two ex parts of the hated USSR are wearing each other down by being constantly on their guard agains the other into a third world war (the situation actually fits them perfectly long term). Russian army stationed on Ukraine's border is not numerous enough to take Kiev exept by starvation, and after that, would not be able to hold it for long except by killing the entire populace (putting them in internment camps would cost too much). At most the Russians would take some land around Donetsk and Lugansk to create a perimiter and that's it.

  10. What good are fixed extra wing tanks to P-51 Mustangs, (already renowned for their range and capable of carrying detatchable extra fuel tanks) in a role of COIN aircraft? That just adds two extra weak points on the plane (if hit by incendiary rounds) that cannot be detatched... And a 250 x 100 kms country bought such a plane... It was as if all the people involved were brain dead...

  12. Yugoslavia never produced a true jet fighter. It produced Jet trainers (G-2 Galebs, G-4 Super Galebs) and light attack jet aircraft (J-21 Jastrebs, J-22 Oraos). But it never acquired a license for a jet engine powerful enough to power a world-class jet fighter. It imported fighter jets instead (F-80s, F-86es, Mig-21s and Mig-29s chronologically, the former two actually being granted by USA as military aid).

Titonium > Stalinium Jokes aside - Yugoslavia was agreed upon as early as 1943 by Churchill and Stalin to effectively be a buffer state between the Soviet and Western spheres of influence, with the opposing powerblocks sharing a 50:50 influence, similar to Finland and Austria, though Yugoslavia was unusual in that it was communist unlike the other two. Those buffer states were agreed upon to reduce the risk of another world war because of some stupid border incident between the powerblocks' troops. Tito had more luck compared to capability than usually given credit (he certainly credited himself with way more than he achieved before anyone who would listen to his cult of personality propaganda).

J-22 was a co-production project with communist Romania and their aircraft had the designation of IAR-93 Vultur, but have since been retired. Some former Yugoslav J-22s are still frontline attack aircraft in the successor Serbian Air Force.

  17.  @jamiegray6931  Actually Iraqi Air Force did put up a fight. They downed an F-18 on the first night, damaged a few more aircraft and conducted a few hit and run attacks that had no result only because the targeted US aircraft managed to evade the missiles. Iraqi air defense shot down 40+ aircraft. Operation Desert Storm lasted for 42 days. While the outcome was hardly in doubt it was no mere pushover. Iraq had experience from Iran-Iraq war. Today is only day 5 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine (although, to be fair they've been wearing down the latter for some 8 years now with the takeover of Crimea and War in Donbas). What could one expect? It's a conventional war and Ukraine is no pushover either + it can receive more help from West than Iraq could from anyone in 1991.

  23. It was ok for the time but was short ranged and poorly suited for mass production. At the time the Japanese had the carrier capable and ultra long ranged A6M2 Zero which was suited for mass production and better armed. In Europe, Bf109 e was better as it was better armed, a little faster. Spitfire was also better. Yak 1 was also a little better (faster). And all were well suited for mass production.

Allied flyable planes were: Morane Bullet, Airco DH2, Sopwith Pup, Nieuport 17, Spad 7, Sopwith Triplane, SE5A, Sopwith Camel, Spad 13 and Sopwith Snipe. German flyable planes were: Fokker Eindecker, Albatroses DII, D III, DVa, Pfalz IIId, Fokker Dr I and Fokker DVII.

  38. Realpolitik. Tito was deemed worthy of supporting to make a posterboy for any communist leaders that are considering rebeling against the dominance from Moscow. It perhaps helped cause the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. the Prague Spring of 1968. and possibly even the defections of the East European countries to the west in the aftermath of the fall of Berlin Wall (though it certainly wasn't the main reason, just help).

  42. It's all bullshit. They are most certainly not going to invade Ukraine with those forces. Had they intended to invade they would have done so already before the massing of the troops could be detected - in order to have an element of surprise (remember there was no gradual buildup before the recent Artsakh conflict or the invasion of Crimea for instance).
