  3. 4: by Malcolm's own logic he values "pluralism" ie diversity for diversity sake. Imagine you're a farmer and one season there's a massive drought that really does a number on much of your crop. You don't let them all die and exclusively save the seeds of the plants who survive. You might get a more drought tolerant strain for future seasons but with little genetic diversity you're likely to see a single disease wipe out your entire yield next go around. Instead you triage the situation and nurture some of the crops through the drought and save some of those seeds as well.
