  1. That is inaccurate. You have a gateway device which is a modem, router, switch, and wifi ap in one unit. That is also common here in the US. Pretty much every major provider here will sell/rent/lease you a gateway unit. With some providers, you can opt to buy your own modem as some providers will charge you a monthly fee. For instance, Comcast (cable internet provider) will charge you $15/month for their xFi gateway unit. Most of the time, most people just use what they get from their provider. Its usually the enthusiasts who like to tinker with stuff that buy a dedicated modem and then a router.
