  1. Yeah. You just boot from your Ubuntu installer and go through the install process as you would any other system. Plenty of guides and videos on how to do this.

  2. VMware was bought out by Broadcom a while back. That's one of many changes they made: removing free trials. They're moving/have moved to a subscription model instead of buying a perpetual license.
