Yeah. Engines themselves are not very complicated machines. What has made them complicated are all the sensors and wiring and modules and computers that go with them.

Good luck! There's a lot of things to learn in the automobile world. Take lots of notes and review them. Use different sources to help you understand how things work.

Same core concepts. Its just that instead of spark plugs, diesel engines use the heat of compression to ignite the diesel/oxygen mixture. They have glow plugs, which look similar to spark plugs but they are used to warm up the engine to make it easier to start in colder climates.

Hey. Thanking things apart is the easy part. Putting it back together and having it work correctly is a whole different game 😆😆

Pretty much all typical consumer-level gasoline-powered engines operate in the same manner. Each manufacturer will do things a bit differently and have different naming conventions. But at the core, they work more or less the same.

I think an even more toxic trait is thinking you can put it back together in working order. Taking stuff apart is usually easy. Putting it back together can be a challenge. But putting it back together and having it work correctly is an even bigger challenge. lol.

I hear you. My dad has been a mechanic for 3+ decades. He is very knowledgeable about cars, but he isn't a very good explainer.

As I understand it, most modern vehicles have at least 2 O2 sensors. The first one is in the intake so that the computer can know how much air and in turn, oxygen, is coming in so that it can regulate the amount of fuel needed for the given engine load. This is the upstream sensor since it is placed before the catalyst.

Unfortunately, most people who drive cars are usually not interested in how they work. They only care to get from point a to point b and maybe c & d. They don't care to learn how an engine works.
