There are many intermediate routers between your home router and Gmail's servers. You can run a traceroute to see the route packet takes. Google has numerous data centers across the planet, so it can vary depending on where you are.

lol dude. You've never worked in tech support have you? There is still a lot, and I do mean a lot of tech illiteracy in the world.

You probably missed the point that this is aimed at your everyday person, not a person who is very well versed in telecomms.

Look up ISP peering and Internet Exchange Points

Hypothetically, yes. Realistically, most, if not all of these communications are encrypted. So even if you were to intercept the communications, you wouldn't be able to make sense of them. That is unless you happen to be a govt agency with a nearly unlimited budget.

I completely agree. I work in school IT support and I sometimes joke with my staff telling them that it works through magic until it doesn't work. Most of the time, they don't really care how it works as long as it works. Some are more curious and ask more questions and I answer accordingly.

That's one way of looking at it. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I know many people would have a big issue with that. And what I mean by that is that there are people who have a big distrust in the government. I can only speak out in general about the US as I've only lived here. There are a large amount of people who absolutely distrust the US govt. and would not like that approach because they feel that the government could manipulate or control the internet. In their mindset, they prefer the free market where ISPs are incentivized to provide service where its more profitable rather than provide unprofitable areas with any service at all or to modernize their service.

I agree, but unfortunately we all know a lot of people have no desire to learn about any of this. They only care about instagram or tiktok.
