  2. This is what is called a flat-four engine (Subaru calls it a boxer engine). Instead of a typical inline 4 engine where the pistons are in a straight line, the flat-four has the pistons horizontally.

  3. I'm not very knowledgeable with cars, but I believe it is the blow off valve from the turbocharger. When you let off of the accelerator pedal, the gases from the turbo have no where to go which means there's an increase in pressure in the turbo. There's a valve that opens to relieve the excess pressure and that is what causes that whistling sound you hear.
