I don't know about other US states, but in California, there are no vehicle safety inspections. The only inspection we have here is emissions testing (smog check), but that doesn't apply to vehicles older 1975.

As I understand it, that right mirror wasn't required when the vehicle was made.

California is the most over-regulated and over-taxed state in every category you can think of, especially smog check (emissions testing). However, we have no vehicle safety inspection here. Your car can be in unsafe condition but no one cares. But if it doesn't pass the smog check, you can't get it registered. also since this is a very old vehicle, I presume its exempt from any inspection standards assuming there were any. Pre 1972 vehicles I believe are also exempt from smog check.

Here in California, we have no vehicle inspections. Its ironic because California is the most over-regulated and over-taxed state in every category you can think of, especially emissions testing, yet there are no safety inspections. Your car can be in unsafe condition to drive and no one cares at all. But if it doesn't pass smog check (emissions testing), you can't renew your tags and is not 'legal' to drive in CA roads until you get it smogged.

Yep. You would think they would be pristine relative to the tax we pay, but no.

What do you mean? As draconian as California is with cars, its ironic that there are no safety inspections. The only inspections are emissions inspections done every 2 years. If the vehicle is older than 1975, its exempt from emissions testing.

LOL. I know there are US states where they have some sort of safety inspections (probably not as good as your country's), but others don't have that. California has emissions testing, and that's it.
