Depends on the area. The USA is a very large country with 50 different states. And each state has different road conditions. Most are in decent shape though. A lot are in bad shape and also a lot of roads are in horrible condition. California has the highest fuel tax in the USA (among other taxes) and our roads are terrible.

You'll get the hang of it with enough time and practice! I bought myself a 22 WRX at the end of September. I managed to test drive it without stalling. But when I drove it home, I couldn't make it up my driveway! I think I stalled it 3 times before I made it up. lol. I have had the car for almost 7 months and I don't consider myself an expert, but I can drive it well enough to infrequently stall it. Good luck!

If I'm not mistaken, once you fully let go of the clutch pedal the engine (technically the crankshaft) is fully connected with the input shaft of the transmission. This means the engine's power is being sent to the transmission through this shaft. In other words, it allows the wheels to start spinning. When you push the clutch pedal, you "break" this connection which is what allows you to smoothly shift into gears.

It is not a good idea to keep the clutch held in unnecessarily. You can damage it or cause excessive wear. If you're stopped for a couple seconds at the most, its probably no big deal. But if you're in traffic waiting at a light you want to shift into neutral and release the clutch pedal.

Hardly anyone buys M/T vehicles in USA. There's no distinction on your driver's license between manual and automatic. And every year car manufacturers make less and less M/T vehicles.

Here in the USA we don't have many MT vehicles anymore. Each year manufacturers are making less and less MT cars anymore. And in general, most people just drive automatics or vehicles with CVTs or more recently, EVs. There's no distinction between M/T and automatic in your driver's license.

Cool! I just bought a 22 WRX w/ a 6 spd M/T almost a month ago. I've more or less got the driving portion down. now I just need to work on rev matching. I understand the concept, but I just need the practice.

@selinn5537 Yep. Very few cars are sold with manual transmissions. Every year there are less and less. Everything is either automatic, CVT, or EV. Very few new MT vehicles. I know Subaru still makes the WRX and BRZ with M/T. Ford only makes the Bronco and Mustang with M/T. Toyota makes the Tacoma, GR Corolla, GR Supra with a M/T. Honda makes the Civic SI with M/T. And most manufacturers make very little of the M/T models nowadays which makes it very difficult to find any anywhere.

The only real way to practice is with a real car. Simulations are cool and all, but they can't replicate the actual driving experience of a car.

The vast majority of cars in the US have automatic transmissions. Not many people nowadays learn to drive with a manual transmission. They're not extinct, but not nearly as common as they were decades ago. There's no manual/automatic driver's license test.

When I was about 13, 12 years ago, my dad took me out to drive outside of my town in a rural area in a 97 Ford Escort with a MT. Couldn't quite get the hang of it and didn't really practice much after that. About a month ago, he had me drive his 1971 Datsun truck. It took me several tries and stalls to understand 6:54. The problem I had was that I would let go off the clutch too soon and not give the truck enough gas. It definitely is a balancing act. However, once I started to find that balance, it became easier to get the truck to move without stalling or jerking around too much. Definitely made me happy. To test my skills, he had me drive to the local dump since we needed to dump some trash. I was nervous about stopping the traffic lights and stop signs because I felt that I would stall the truck, but to my surprise it only happened once. And that was because while I was waiting at a traffic light, I had a brief lapse of judgement and didn't check to make sure it was in neutral and let off the clutch (4:27). Luckily I had brake pedal down, but for a split second, I didn't realize what had happened. To make things more challenging, the truck has no power steering so it makes making slow speed turns more difficult. Even though I don't drive the truck regularly, it was still pretty cool driving it. Definitely an engaging experience, especially with an old vehicle without many modern amenities. I just need more practice to refine the shifting. I did notice that when I would upshift, the shift wasn't always smooth.

Its a learning curve. Once you have a good control of the clutch/gas pedal, it becomes easier. But with all things, it takes practice and more practice. If you can, try practicing around your neighborhood or an empty parking lot. That way if you stall (which will happen while you're learning) its no big deal. Once you feel more comfortable driving it, you can go out to the streets and roads in your area with the rest of traffic.

Yes. Manuals have become increasingly rarer over the years. I think over the past 30 years, automatics have been the main vehicles. Hardly anyone ever drives manuals anymore. And each year, more and more automakers are discontinuing the little MT vehicles they still sold. For instance, the only M/T vehicles Ford sells in the USA are the Bronco and Mustang. And only certain trims are M/T. They stopped selling M/T trucks like 16 years ago. Honda stopped selling the Accord with a M/T in 2019 from what I can see. Everything nowadays is mostly automatic/CVT/EV.

There aren't many diesel vehicles with manual transmissions in the USA. You usually only find those in very old pickup trucks or big rigs.

Yep. I started learning in my dad's 1971 Datsun pickup truck. The thing is very noisy, has no power steering, no A/C, very thin steering wheel and no modern amenities. It is surprisingly quick though. I've mostly got the hang of it, but I just need some more practice with shifting to make things smooth out.

You can say the same thing about just about anything. Why would anyone want to make things "hard" for themselves and spend countless hours researching and building their own computer when they can just go to a store and buy a pre-built one?

Its not that hard to imagine. If you're in the USA, its very difficult to find a manual transmission car. Hardly anyone drives them and manufacturers are making less and less M/T cars every year. To each their own.

lol. 🤣That was my brother too. He bought himself a 1991 Mazda Miata with a manual transmission. Luckily, he bought it from a lady that lives just a few minutes down the street so he didn't have to drive it home too far.

Yep. Though it makes sense since like 95% of vehicles in the US are automatic. I think many decades ago manual transmission cars were far more popular, but that shifted a long time ago. Nowadays, its getting harder to find manual transmission cars anymore.

There is no automatic transmission test. In the US, there is no distinction between manual and automatic transmission vehicles in terms of your driver's license or test. It is more or less assumed that you will drive an automatic car since there are so few manual transmission vehicles here.

I know the feeling. I learned on my dad's 1971 Datsun pick up. It was parked on the side of our house and he asked me to bring it to our front yard to load up a bunch of tree branches after we pruned our tree. I stalled in many times. 🤣

Here in the US not many people drive manual transmission cars. If there aren't many, it makes more sense that a lot of drivers don't know how to drive one.

Yep that's true. Very few people nowadays know how to drive M/T. There are less and less M/T vehicles sold and most manufacturers have dramatically lowered their production or outright stopped making them for most models. So even if they still make a few manual vehicles, it can be very difficult to find one since they're just not very popular. From what I was able to find, the last Ford pickup that had a manual transmission was in 2008. There's no distinction in your license between manual and automatic.

Well, automatics have been the standard for at least 25 years and its easier for most people to learn that rather than dealing with the learning curve. Also, most people are not interested in cars. They just want something that is easy to drive. In other words, you can say that a lot of Americans, especially the younger generations are very lazy and/or not as motivated or eager to learn what they may consider archaic.
