I think if we want Linux to be the future, there has to be a huge push to get the average user to even know it exists. Do your friends and family know about Linux? When was the last time you saw a computer (be it desktop or laptop) in-store that came with Linux? You can buy computers pre-loaded with Linux online, but again, the vast majority of people have never heard of brands like System76. I know a lot of the major computer manufacturers sell PCs with Linux pre-installed, but they don't advertise them.

The only problem is, how do you train your users? Have you ever worked in tech support? There are many people who get so used to a way they do things that any little change in how their icons look or even a color or text change can make them very confused. How would you approach this? Say you're the IT director for for a school district. You have about 13k students and about 1000 employees: about 600 teachers and about 400 non-teaching staff. How do you propose this to your governing board? What's your roll out plan? What about user training? Because there will be many people who will be extremely confused about why their computer looks so different. You have some users who can easily get the hang of it. Others will not understand how to do anything at all. I'm not trying to be combative, but I'm just genuinely curious. Its easy to just say "switch to linux". That's great, but oftentimes we don't see the big picture of the impact, negative or positive a huge change like his can have. I'm talking from my experience at a school district as an IT tech. We primarily run Windows for staff and Chromebooks for students. The vast majority of our staff members are not tech savvy at all. Some users get extremely confused and frustrated with little changes, so I can only imagine how frustrated they would be if we were to move them to something that looks radically different. Just like people hated the transition from XP to Vista and 7 because they look so different.
