  1. As I understand it, intercoolers are used to cool the exhaust gasses. When air is cooler, it is more dense meaning it can contain more oxygen in the same amount of volume as if it were at a higher temperature. This extra oxygen allows for better and more efficient combustion which yields more power. I'm sure there's some more scientific and technical information behind this, but I'm pretty sure that's the gist of it.
