LMAO that was painful to read if you teach your kids how to be smart on the internet it is incredible you talk about them watching the news that seems terrible as a lot of it is negative lmao ever heard of grammar only thing i agree with is talking with friends the rest is delusional nonsense
3
lmao. Since when is an 18 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up speed fast enough? That's the fastest AT&T could provide at my house for years.

Its all about money. The USA really should mean "UCA" United Corporations of America. Here, money talks. ISPs will do whatever they can to maintain their infrastructure the least amount as possible while charging the most they can and making the most profits they can. AT&T is among the largest telecommunications company in the US. They primarily sell DSL internet and fiber internet. There are parts of their footprint that are rural and have archaic equipment. AT&T doesn't seem to be interested in modernizing some of those areas so when their equipment fails,t hey won't replace it or repair it or upgrade it. It will be bad for the people in those areas who rely on it. They more or less prioritize the areas that are the most profitable for them and neglect their less profitable areas. Another big thing is legal bribing... Sorry, I mean lobbying. A lot of these companies spend a lot of money to make sure they are the only provider in town and/or make it incredibly difficult for other providers to come in. You typically have in most towns a DSL provider and a cable internet provider. And they may make deals where only x provider can service a certain section of town and provider y can only enter in certain parts. Its an absolute mess. That doesn't mean that there is no fiber internet here. There are many areas that have absolutely great and reasonably priced internet. But at the same time, we have many areas with absolute crap internet.

Well I'm glad I'm finally getting to get fiber installed in my neighborhood! We have a new fiber ISP come into town about a year ago and they're building out infrastructure across town. Just got a notice about a week ago that their crews will be working in our neighborhood installing services. We don't have a date yet, but I can't wait to get it installed! I'm getting rid of Comcast as soon as I can!
1
No. We're very slowly getting there. Too much bureaucracy, corporate greet, etc that makes it difficult to get fiber everywhere.
1
Highly doubtful. And plus, all those cell towers still need fiber. They don't work on magic.
1
@lantrick It greatly depends on your area. My town has fiber infrastructure, but neither AT&T nor Comcast really provide much fiber internet to homes. AT&T has been very slowly upgrading certain neighborhoods over the past decade or so, but it is slower than a snail's pace. One would think that California, being a technologically advanced state with Silicon Valley would have fiber everywhere, but no.
1
Anywhere from non-existent to the best thing ever. It greatly varies depending on where you live.
1
Hey, its insanely expensive to bury electrical lines. PG&E, our electric provider is raising rates to help "pay" for the burial of hundreds of miles of overhead lines over the next years.
1
Because its not always feasible to install fiber. If you're in a remote village up in the mountains, it can be extremely difficult to get wired services.
1
5G still requires fiber infrastructure. And you also have to consider the limited spectrum available to wireless. There's been many instances of people getting really great speeds on 5G home internet (like Verizon, T-mobile etc) and then as more people start using the service, it gets saturated and slows down for everyone.
1
wifi isn't expensive. Wifi and internet are 2 very different things that people don't seem to understand are different. You mean internet from Comcast is expensive. I fully agree.
1
How does that work if there are little to no poles in a neighborhood? What about underground utilities?
1
I think my neighborhood and the ones near me are getting upgraded to fiber in the hopefully near future. I saw a cabinet (not sure what the technical term is) installed several months ago not too far from my area. For several months, there was nothing on it, and just last week they put some labels on it that say AT&T fiber. Not sure how long it will take, but I can't wait to get rid of comcast.
1
Yes dude. There is a lot of fiber infrastructure in the US. Most places have some fiber infrastructure. The issue is fiber to the home. A lot of places don't have that for x y z reason.
1
eh not quite. I've been to parts of Mexico where they have sub-standard internet.
1
That's why adblockers exist.
1
Oftentimes, its the only good choice for fast internet. Depending on where you live, you can have slow DSL or relatively fast cable internet.
1
Nah. I tried T-Mobile Home Internet and AT&T internet Air and neither was particularly great. TMHI was slower most of the time than my old DSL connection. AT&T was faster, but still slower compared to my cable internet I had at the time. I just got fiber about 5 months ago and its been a game changer. Most people also don't realize that the 5G home internet services are lower priority compared to cellphones.
1
???? What does that mean???
1
I heard about that. I live in the Yuba Sutter area. It looks like they considered our area at one point for fiber internet but for some reason, it didn't go through which sucks.
1
I live in a town of 70k people north of Sacramento CA and we're barely getting some fiber infrastructure built out to homes
1
There are plenty of areas in Mexico that have sub-standard internet as well. My family lives near Zamora, Mich. and they constantly get flyers from Telmex advertising their fiber internet (Infinitum) service but its only available in certain parts of the town. They happen to be outside of their fiber footprint so they can only get crappy DSL service from them. They have an alternative, Megacable which offers a 100 Mbps connection. Not bad.
1
What exactly do you mean problems with 100 Mbps? I have Comcast which is a coax internet provider and have a 475 Mbps internet package from them and it works great. Still prefer fiber, but it has been reliable in the 4 years I've had the service.
1
Its been around for decades, but most of the US population hasn't had access to it outside of large areas. And even then, that greatly depends on where in those areas you live.
1
Yep. My town in northern California is getting fiber internet installed. Its a slow process, but I'm just glad we're getting a different company other than AT&T or Comcast. As soon as its available at my house, I'm dropping Comcast.
1
What do you mean? They just installed some fiber infrastructure in our neighborhood over the past few months. And I live in northern California.
1
Depende en donde vivas. Tengo Comcast (similar a Megacable) y pago $200/mes. Es una connexion de 470 Mbps, servicio de television y telefono de casa.
1
I get what you're saying, but its going to be incredibly difficult to convince people to connect their devices with a cable. Wifi makes it much more convenient for most average people. I highly doubt most people want to wire their house with ethernet in every room or pay for that when wifi does most of the job. I do agree that wired is better for most tasks.
1
Es lo mismo en Mexico. Ahorita estoy de vacaciones en Acambaro, GTO y en la casa de mis abuelos, no tienen acceso a fibra optica. Mi tia tiene una conexion de 30 Mbps por Telmex.
1
Yep. One thing to know about the US is that everything is about money. People and companies and organizations will try to find ways to monetize things as much as possible. ISPs here will do whatever they can to spend the least amount as possible while making the most profit as possible. It sucks.
1
lmao. Its not a scam. If it was a scam, why would fiber be used as the backbone of modern computer networks? Just because it doesn't work well for you doesn't mean it in itself is a scam. Its hard to say why you're having trouble. It could be a bad router, bad fiber connection, something on your internet provider's end, etc. You do realize that the cell towers your 5G device connects to also use fiber cables as a backhual?
