  1. Whoa that's insane and you are actually mostly correct! They preferred professional rowers of if they used slaves they usually promised freedom. Scipio did use thousands of slaves during the Punic Wars but their fate is unknown. When you think of rowers back then you think of one of the worse jobs possible. Slaves tied chained to their spot with a slave master wipping them for motivation and a drummer for orders. Truly a hell job. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I just assumed back when slavery was a thing it made sense to have them do it. Its actually insane how many people were on those ships at any given time. I have to read up on the logistics like food and fresh water. Also how important the sales were to propelling the ship across the Mediterranean.
