  1. No it makes perfect sense for a stop gap. With technology moving so fast it might not make sense to make orders for 2k airframes just to have them out dated in five to ten years. Not like upgrading airframes is cheap. We are spending a fortune doing it. We are on the verge of Hypersonic and RDE (engines). We are on the verge of aircraft that use no flight surfaces that will help stealth designs immensely. Forgot the name. Air to air seems to be highly dependent on who detects who first, and can reach out further. Which means big sensors, and a big interior bay for larger missiles. A war against China means we need extra range. You can't fit that into a fighter. So I've been questioning wouldn't it be amazing if the B21 took over as a missile boat for a2a. We know if has great sensors as it's job is also for recon, stealth signature, and large enough bay to carry missiles. It could literally dominate a2a along with something like the F 35. (Ya know if it can target and fire at multiple aircraft using the F 35 sensors. Or a recon drones. ) Anyway I think the AF is pushing for autonomous aircraft. Where manned aircraft are there as directors if you will. We don't have enough pilots. Think 600 short at the moment. So having drones to fight China who has a massive population advantage is paramount. So I think this is the future for sure. Long gone are the dog fights of the past or need for insane agility.
