  1. Geography my friend. It connects the west and the east. If one could actually subdue it and put up a puppet state they could profit from untapped resources and have a good buffer state. That is why empires always want it as it looks easy on paper but they misunderstand the culture. Apparently Afghans didn't seem to get that memo... Ever. They don't give a crap about any Empire unless its by their own.
