  1. That is nonesense? Many highways do pay for themselves indirectly through increasing commerce, and trade is taxed. Then you have tolls on some roads. Railway can be profitable too without subsidies, but it shouldn't be. It should definitely either be ran by the government, and subsidized. At least for public transportation. It should also increase commerce, but I'm not sure how much just public rail increases it if any at all. Edit. Also he is talking about just high speed versus regular rail.
