I think people are asking why hasn't there been any paradgrim shift in our understanding of the cosmos by therotical physicist that fit together some of the inconsistency. If a genius actually experimentally proved String Theroy that would instantly shut this question down. Yet string Theorist keep moving the goal post everytime an experiment fails. Then they go back, and try to change the math to fit the observation. Instead of the observation fitting the math. Seems like we are just reinforcing old ideas these days, and that is it. Personally I feel like quantum mechanics has come a long way in my lifetime. At least the practical side of things, but I'm not sure if it is therotical physicist doing that work. Or the material and computer science at using old ideas. Some say we are on a cusp. I'm not holding my breath.
