Russia: elementary school starts around 9:00, typically goes for four 45-minute classes with 10, then 15 then 20 minute break. At 12:45 kids go back home. Back in Soviet times kids used to be self-sufficient enough to come back home as early as 2nd grade, do the homework, warm up lunch, do the dishes, play with friends, etc. until their parents would come from work and put their kids to sleep. Middle and high school has five or six 45-minute classes a day. Summer break is full three summer months: June, July and August. School takes 11 years, it used to be 10 years. Schools all over the country start on September 1. For any Russian, the American schedule with 6-hour school day and 4-minute breaks would be considered torture.
