In a 1992 American documentary they say about first Americans, about the birth of the nation, about the war for independence, and they don't mean native American nations. The winner defines the rules of the game and rewrites the history. I am happy that the Ukrainians can take their history and their land back.

  5. Something that is immediately apparent for an American viewer: farm fields are not fenced, and farm roads are accessible to everyone else. I guess this is how things are done in Germany, France, Sweden, in many other European countries. So unlike the US, where the sense of ownership is overwhelming, even the land that is not owned by farmers like grazing meadows leased from the state is fenced off with frightening signs.

There is a difference between Lettish and Latvian, just like there is a difference between Rossiyanin and Russian. One is ethnicity, another is citizenship. All citizens of Latvia are Latvian, but not all of them are Lettish. It is interesting that he calls himself Lettish, not Russian. The translation has actually corrected him :)

  10. Mark Wigley is off base regarding iPhone being a Bauhaus product. Well, maybe the later ones. But early iPhones and iMacs and iOS itself were full of skeuomorphic elements, which to me are anti-Bauhaus, they are non-functional, they are there for the looks, and the looks was gaudy to me, I have always hated faux-wooden shelf for eBooks, for example. Good that Apple got rid of skeuomorphism.

  12. Leonid Rabichev in his book "Fog of war" (Леонид Рабичев, "Война всё спишет") wrote about Soviet soldiers raping German women. Rape was often done in sadistic manner, not just sexual acts but inserting things like bottles into women's vaginas. After being raped, often multiple times, bleeding women were often killed. The rapists were not just ethnic Russians, as the Soviet Army comprised many ethnicities. Some try to paint the Soviets as animals, different from other people. I think that events like My Lai massacre prove that the Soviets were no different from, say, Americans. I guess, in certain situations everyone can behave inhumanely.
