@HSKFab STS and autopilot malfunction show up differently, does not have the same authority, and on the NG, stab could be controlled with electric trim by turning off one trim switch, this is not possible on the MAX. Also, with the larger size of the aircraft, the surfaces are 60% larger than on the original 737 and much harder to operate. The roller coaster maneuver was removed from 737 NG and 737 MAX FCOM. All in all, it is a much dicier situation than with runaway STS. MCAS malfunction was not recognized as runaway trim, and when it was, it was impossible to correct with manual trim.
