Traditional multi-generational family is broken now in the U.S. Two generations at most live together, older parents/grandparents are shoved off to asylums, where they await for death surrounded by old people like themselves, who die almost daily. I can see how one would want to commit suicide. Older people should live together with young ones.

  2.  @BLISSedWater  "most people do not wish to be holed up with family throughout life" - sure, they need to be holed up in a retirement home, which is not a home but a dorm full of old people who kick the bucket every other day. I hear you, this is great living. You want it for yourself, I suppose.
